What are Facebook, My Space and Twitter used for?
If you want to set up a site where you can post your moment by moment experiences with your friends and family, set up a free account with Facebook, My Space or Twitter. I have all three.
I use Facebook to keep up with all of my friends on a daily basis. The advantages that you can see what all of your friends are doing at a glance. The posts are grouped together by with related comments. Your friends can share their friends with you. You can post publically to your friends collectively … or you can send your friends a private e-mail through your Facebook. Also, any time someone sends you an e-mail, posts or tags you on Facebook you can receive an e-mail reminder in your regular email account. You and your friends can post messages, comments, pictures, videos and music. If you are out and about, you can download applications to your I-Phone, so that you access your Facebook anywhere. The disadvantages are that some firewalls block Facebook; so there is a chance you will not be able to access it at your place of work … and let me warn you, if you have a good number of friends and don’t check it regularly you will miss some of the postings. I have around 180 friends and I have to check it at least twice a day to not miss something.
MySpace has a scrap book kind of a feel. Friends can post messages, comments, pictures, videos and music. I like it, but find the formatting isn’t as user-friendly.
I joined Twitter a while back, and haven’t really used it too much. It is great for keeping up with your friends and family … and also network with others of the same interests. It is quick moving … and great for throwing out a thought or a question and getting a speedy response.
Be careful not to download dangerous applications that are advertised alongside Facebook and MySpace. Don’t assume that everything offered is related to the website. I never use any applications until I have checked into the reputation of the company, and asked around to find out others say about the applications first.
I will compare other sites in my next blogs. Hopefully, this will help you find which type of a site would be best fitting for your needs.
